Description

Julie A. Washington
Professor and chair of the Department of Communications Sciences and Disorders at Georgia State University

Julie A. Washington is the chair and a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University in Atlanta. She specializes in language development and disorders in high-risk populations; early literacy and language interactions; African-American Child English; and African-American student achievement.

Washington’s work focuses on understanding cultural dialect use in African-American children with a specific emphasis on the impact of dialect on language assessment, literacy attainment and academic performance. Her work with preschoolers has focused on understanding and improving the emergent literacy skills necessary to support later reading proficiency in high-risk groups, with a special focus on the needs of children growing up in poverty in urban contexts. In addition, Washington is a co-director of the Center for Research on the Challenges of Acquiring Language and Literacy at Georgia State. Currently, Washington is a principal investigator on the Georgia Learning Disabilities Research Innovation Hub, funded by the National Institutes of Health – Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. This research initiative is focused on improving early identification of reading disabilities in elementary-school-aged African-American children who speak cultural dialects, and includes a focus on children, their families, teachers and communities.

Washington earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Spelman College, and her Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Michigan.
