David Harris

David Harris is one of the Jewish people’s foremost leaders and most eloquent spokesmen. He has led AJC, the premier global advocacy organization, since 1990.

AJC has been described by The New York Times as the “dean of American Jewish organizations,” and by former French President Nicolas Sarkozy as, under David’s leadership, the “most effective, influential, and respected” American Jewish organization. The late Israeli President Shimon Peres referred to him as “the foreign minister of the Jewish people,” and former Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said: “David is the consummate Jewish diplomat of our time.”

As a leading Jewish advocate, Mr. Harris has been invited to speak at some of the world’s most prestigious forums. He was the first American Jewish leader to address the World Economic Forum in Davos, at a session chaired by Tony Blair. He has testified before the U.S. Congress on several occasions, as well as before the UN Human Rights Commission and the French and Italian Parliaments. In addition, he has been invited to speak at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton universities, as well as many other distinguished institutions in the U.S. and overseas.

Mr. Harris has been honored 15 times by 11 governments – Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria (2x), France (2x), Germany (2x), Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Poland (2x), Spain, and Ukraine for his international efforts on behalf of the defense of human rights, advancement of the transatlantic partnership, and dedication to the Jewish people. He has been invited to serve on four official U.S. government delegations to international conferences, and has been awarded three honorary doctorates.

Mr. Harris graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. He pursued his graduate studies in international relations at the London School of Economics and spent a year as a Junior Associate at Oxford University (St. Antony’s College). He was a Visiting Scholar at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (2000-02) and a Senior Associate at Oxford University (St. Antony’s College, 2009-11). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Harris is the author of seven books – The Jewish World, Entering a New Culture, and five volumes of In the Trenches – and co-author of an eighth, The Jokes of Oppression. He has written hundreds of articles, op-eds, letters, and reviews in leading newspapers and magazines. From 2001 to 2015, he had a weekly spot on the CBS Radio Network, reaching millions of listeners across the United States. He writes a popular blog on international affairs at The Huffington Post and Times of Israel.
